Flipping which stick (L or R) controls the ship should make most people happy with the lack of twin stick feel.
Keeping the control scheme the same as designed, gives a option for moving / aiming with the opposite stick.
I do like the asteroids control scheme, and I like that it is not a twin stick shooter. I think a good compromise is a left or right stick choice for controlling\rotating the ship.
I know it sounds odd but it would place the twin stick feel without breaking the vision of the developer.
