UltraC has this problem frequently and so do I. Certain combos make for so much screen clutter that the ship gets lost and you lose ability to see where the heck the ship is. I know there are visual clues (like the aim beam) but it kinda gets lost too. Perhaps the ship can get an outline of some sort and put into a layer that is always top most layer.
I think shield color affects this some, but there has to be a way to solve this visual problem.
Grenade mines is a great example of something that can produce so much screen clutter that the ship tends to disappear in the explosions.
